RideKC Freedom On-Demand

RideKC Freedom On-Demand is a new cutting edge transit option. Freedom On-Demand begins with a strong core service for persons with disabilities and builds on that foundation to provide fast, affordable cab rides for everyone. The app-based service allows anyone to book a cab ride without providing 24 hours’ notice required of paratransit service RideKC Freedom.

Traditional paratransit services in Kansas City is called RideKC Freedom, formerly Share-A-Fare. Paratransit provides specialized transportation for people with disabilities who are not able to fully use the buses or streetcar that are part of our public transportation system.

RideKC Freedom On-Demand is an app-based service. The RideKC Freedom On-Demand app is available in the Google Play store or the Apple App store.

On-Demand program is open to everyone, but only customers who are certified as disabled under the Americans with Disabilities Act in the RideKC Freedom paratransit program qualify for a reduced fare. The general public can use On-Demand services at the regular price of $5 for the first five miles, and is $2 for every mile after. Riders without a smart phone can call RideKC Call Center to connect with a taxi dispatcher.

  • $5 for the first 5 miles, then $2 per mile after that
  • Shared ride service
  • Up to 60 subsidized one-way trips per month
  • Available to cross service area lines within the service area

Service Area

The service area includes all of Johnson County and Wyandotte County in Kansas, and all of Kansas City and Independence in Missouri.

Hours: Weekday 6:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m. Weekend 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.

How to use the Freedom On-Demand App

What you need to get started:

  • An iPhone or Android smartphone with access to the App Store or Play Store
  • Your paratransit account number and PIN number
  • Trips that originate in the pilot Freedom On-Demand service area

Follow these easy steps to get started:

  1. Download the app.
  2. Sign up: First name, email, phone number and password.
  3. Set up your account: You will need your five-to-seven digit paratransit account number. You will also need to enter your PIN at the time of each booking. Your PIN is your birth year (example: 1975).
  4. Book the trip: Make sure your origin is correct, then select your destination. Then request your trip.
  5. Pay for trip: Use cash or credit/debit card in cab or pay through RideKC Freedom app.

How to use the RideKC Freedom App:

What you need to get started:

  • Apply and get approved for RideKC Freedom service. Contact eligibility at 816.842.9070 option 5 or email eligibility@kcata.org
  • An iPhone or Android smartphone with access to the App Store or Play Store
  • A valid email address. Contact eligibility at 816.842.9070 option 5 or email freedom@kcata.org to update your email.

Follow these easy steps to get started:

1. Download the app using either App Store or Playstore

2. Password Reset

a. Open the RideKC Freedom app on your device. Click “SIGN IN” followed by “Forgot Password”.

b. Enter your email address, and we'll send you an email allowing you to reset your password.
c. Click on the password reset email link you received in your email and set your password

3. Sign In

a. Go back to the RideKC Freedom app and click “SIGN IN” and enter your email address and password that you had set to sign in to your account.

4. Book your ride

     a. Enter the Pick-up and Drop-off locations by typing an address, choosing from the lists of recent or common addresses, or tapping a point on the map

     b. Select the type and number of passengers

     c. Select the approximate pick-up time

     d. Select the date (You can book up to 5 days in advance)

     e. Click Find Rides to see a list of options

     f. Select the most convenient ride option

     g. On the Booking Details page

          i. You can “Add Special Instructions” as notes for the driver

          ii. Select the Payment Method
               I. You can pay using cash or credit/debit card in cab or pay using credit/debit card through RideKC Freedom app.

          iii. Click the button at the bottom of the page to complete the booking process
